Populous Pudding Pt. 2

This is the second installment of the Pudding Vault series (“Populous Pudding Pt. 1” is here). The two bands for today are Woodchipper and the Deadbeats. Both were recorded at the Populous Pudding in 1989.

Woodchipper features Kevin Kraynick, a familiar name to many middle aged cranks, thanks to his old ‘zine Damp. In addition to beating up a shopping cart and a tv set, Kevin sang three of the four Woodchipper songs that are shared in this post (he also drew the sweaty dude on the left). Trombone player Rich Rapp clutched the microphone for the tear jerker titled Laid. The other members of Woodchipper on hand for this performance were Jake Glanz (bass & keyboards), Ashford Joe Mellet (electric guitar), Andy Wandzilak (saxophone, keyboards, percussion), and Smiling Joe Cosgrove (drums). The four Woodchipper songs are: Elected, Laid, Burger, and Baco Bits.

According to R.Crumb, there have been 217 American rock’n’roll bands named the Deadbeats and he has refused to hear any of them. His loss. The Deadbeats that appear on the audio links below were discovered on Kevin Kraynick’s old radio show at WHUS.  The band first received ‘zine notice after releasing their I’d Do It If I Had The Impala cassette. They also had two 7” records and appeared on the second Footprints Of God compilation. There are only 8 things not to hate about Connecticut. The Deadbeats, along with the recording artists known as Ham Steak, Pops Moretti, and Luxurious Bags (of Vomit) are four of the eight. The coffee at Mamouns in New Haven may be #5. Fuck knows what the other three are.

At this Populous Pudding show the Deadbeats were singer/bassist Rick DeCrescenzo and drummer/singer Tom Deflumere. dawn C. sat in on guitar, learning the songs as they played. Audience member Dead Bob Chamenko (no relation) hooted and heckled throughout, after having joined the band onstage with his harmonica for Down The Cove.  The four Deadbeats tunes are: Down The Cove, Bring Back The Broadleaf, Big Righteous Machine, and Wipe Out
